What is Driveway Sealant?

Driveway sealants are protective substances applied to concrete surfaces to prevent degradation over time. While plain concrete is durable, driveways are subject to wear and tear from use and exposure to the elements, which can cause even the best concrete to fade or erode over time.

Sealing your driveway not only reduces the wear on the concrete but also enhances the overall appearance. Concrete typically has a matte finish, but sealants come in various formulations, such as acrylic, polyurethane, and epoxy, which can add a glossy, designer touch while providing different levels of protection and shine.

Sealants help preserve driveways by creating a protective barrier between the concrete and external elements. This barrier shields the concrete from UV rays, preventing fading, and repels water, grease, and oil, making the driveway easier to clean and maintain over the long term.

When to Seal Your Driveway

It's best to seal your driveway soon after it's been professionally installed. This ensures the concrete gets proper treatment from the start, maximizing its longevity.

However, sealants do not last the entire lifespan of the driveway. They act as a protective layer, absorbing the strain, wear, and tear that would otherwise damage the concrete. Over time, this protective layer wears down, requiring reapplication.

Besides a new installation, how can you tell when it's time to reseal your driveway?

Sealants give the concrete a glossy finish, so you can check for signs of wear and loss of shine from traffic or other use. Additionally, sealants make the concrete less porous, preventing water absorption. After a rainstorm, see if water beads on the surface or sinks into the concrete. If it's not beading, the sealant may be less effective, indicating it's time for a new coat.

Keep in mind that sealing is a recurring maintenance task. You should plan to reseal your driveway every five years to maintain its fresh appearance. If your driveway experiences heavy wear and tear, you might need to reseal it every 2-4 years. The frequency depends on usage and your personal preference for its aesthetic appeal.
